Even as Covid-19 cases are fast dwindling across the state, Maharashtra higher and technical education minister Uday Samant on Tuesday ruled out any possibility of reopening the colleges, asserting that online classes would continue as of now.

Interacting with the media during his visit to the city, he said the decision in this regard will be taken by the State Disaster Management Authority headed by chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. “Currently, the condition isn’t conducive to start physical attendance. Positive cases are still cropping up and even the threat of Covid-19 third and fourth waves persist. School education minister (Varsha Gaikwad) also declared that schools would continue to operate in online mode,” Samant said.

Accompanied by Ramtek MP Krupal Tumane and MLA Ashish Jaiswal, the minister added that online exams were forced due to coronavirus outbreak and the government wasn’t keen on conducting it initially last year. “We’ve even cancelled final year exams. But due to Supreme Court’s orders, we had to conduct them in online mode with a view to ensure safety of the students. Now this year, we have successfully held online papers of all universities,” he said
