Nearly more than hundred University students caught cheating in online proctored exams 2021,
They were taking screenshots of paper to share via messaging apps; fate of these third-year engineering pupils now hangs in the balance, with a varsity committee determining the severity .
Owing to the prolonged and resurgent pandemic, this year, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) decided to hold online examinations. These proctored exams are to be conducted via software that once logged in allows you to answer questions in a multiple-choice format. In a twist of events, however, where a few engineering students tried to cheat the system, SPPU was on top of it.
Appearing for their third-year engineering exams last week, 94 students were caught cheating via the SPPU software. The modus operandi of these students, as told to Pune Mirror by authorities, was that one of them would take screenshots of the question.
SPPU chief of examinations, Mahesh Kakade, said the appropriate action will be taken. "We will take legal action against these students within the university framework. We have all the records and evidence in place. All of these will be presented to the committee who will then take the appropriate action," Kakade asserted.
All of these nearly hundred students will be allowed to give the rest of their papers, but their marks will be withheld till the university makes decision in this matter. Once all the evidence and reports have been produced in front of it, the committee will decide on the severity of the issue. Following this, they will make a call on what must be done.
Via the current software, SPPU is able to monitor when a student takes a screenshot. moves to another tab or looks away from the screen. All of these can be considered as means to cheat in the examination. The university is keeping strict tabs on students during the online examination to ensure that it is fair and just to everyone appearing.
Dean of science and technology for SPPU, Dr Manohar Chaskar, when asked about the issue said the committee will address the issue when it is presented to the members. "We will follow university guidelines and the committee will take action within the varsity framework. The incident will be dealt with accordingly," he said, emphasising, "I also take this opportunity to tell students not to take these examinations lightly as their future depends on them. It is important to study and sit for the exams in the correct manner, rather than opt for dishonest means. It is imperative that the exams are not taken for granted."
Weighing in on the matter, educationist Bhau Chaskar said indian society is by no means ready to teach or test online. "In the present extraordinary situation, we will have to face many difficulties as it is impossible to call students and teachers to school or college. Since the of l year been taught line, many have not entirely grasped basic concepts, and hence testing them is essential for their future. However, these exams are bringing forth malpractices of all sorts from students and it would not be appropriate to rely on their honesty while taking exams, given the year they have had. It is necessary to implement technology in a way that prohibits this and stops students from indulging in any form of cheating. They should also be counselled on the
