The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering commonly known as GATE .There is a misconception among students is that the GATE exam is only for ME. /M. Tech which finally leads to a teaching career only. But, it is not correct. The GATE score of the candidate is also used by several public sector undertakings (PSU) (i.e., government-owned companies like Indian Oil, GAIL, and Hindustan Petroleum etc.) for recruiting graduate engineers in entry-level positions, to get Fellowship Programs from CSIR and Scholarships in ME/M.Tech and many more.

About GATE 2021:

GATE 2021 is going to be conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.

GATE 2021 will be conducted for 27 Subjects (also referred to as “papers”).

GATE 2021 examination will be conducted over six days and twelve sessions on Friday 5th, Saturday 6th, Sunday 7th, Friday 12th, Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th of February 2021.
The GATE examination is conducted in different cities across India as well as six cities outside India (In International centres, GATE-2021 will be conducted only if the current COVID-19 situation eases and travel and other restrictions are relaxed. Else GATE-2021 in international centres will be "CANCELLED").
The GATE score would reflect the relative performance level of the candidate in a particular subject, which is quantified based on several years of examination data.

Why to appear for GATE ?
  • To pursue M.E./ M.Tech./ M.Sc  programs in any of the leading institutes in the country

  • Master's degree leads to specialization and cultivates and brings out best of your interest in a certain area which may lead to research / Ph.D.,

  • More domain specific companies recruit through campus recruitment in leading Institutes.

  • Higher salaries are offered for post graduate student when compared to a graduate

  • Masters degree is a must for those wishing to apply for Faculty/Research positions in educational institutes and most of the R&D centers.

  • Scholarship of Rs 8000/- is paid during masters course; so no dependency to parents for financial needs.

  • GATE qualified candidates are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR sponsored projects.

  • More than 37 PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings-government organizations), like BARC, IOCL etc. prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement.

  • Based on the GATE score, some of the foreign university (Like NTU, Singapore) offers Ph.D. position without any GRE score.

  • Most importantly to get to be a part of any nationally reputed Educational Institute and enjoy learning and research in the conducive ambience.

What is PSU ? Why GATE is important for PSUs?

But Is GATE only a option to Join PSU ??

In the current hiring process of PSUs through GATE, the top scorers hold seats in most of the top PSUs and confirms it at the end of the recruitment process. This leads to wastage of available seats.
Even after re counselling and re allotment of seats, about 30% of the seats remain vacant in almost every PSU every year.
To fill the remaining seats, PSUs have to further recruit engineer from IITs, NITs and other reputed colleges. This is also a big pain for them because recruitment is a cumbersome process.

They cannot afford to lose GATE students, as the students go through most tough exam in engineering. They definitely have some class.
For mass recruitment they have to arrange written examination with high class questions. They are anyways getting it directly from the GATE.
That is why some of the PSUs has started partial recruitment through campus placements too. But most of the selections will be from GATE only.
